Event Recap: The Great Girlfriends Cupcakes and Convo NYC
My absolute favorite podcast is The Great Girlfriends! Co-Hosts Brandice Daniel and Sybil Amuti transparently share their lives and give advice that inspire women to go after the life they dream of. I'm always excited to attend a GG event, and this past Wednesday was no different. A group of woman gathered at Origins upper west side location for facials, cupcakes, connecting and a live podcast taping with special guest Julee Wilson. The ladies tossed their planned outline for the taping aside and free styled a conversation that covered confidence, dating, being authentic and Julee's journey to becoming Essence Digital Fashion and Beauty Director.
The night was filled with great gems and takeaways, but here are a few that hit home for me.
1. "I'm Dope"
Julee Wilson genuinely feels this way about herself, and confidence just oozes out of her. I feel as women, we tend to doubt, shrink and disqualify ourselves way too often. If we switch our mindsets to a place of dopeness, I believe we will accomplish more, all because we believe in ourselves and our capabilities.
2. "Put yourself out there"
Julee was referring to dating when she said this and encouraged us to soul swipe, get some free meals and have fun with it. But you can apply this to any aspect of your life that is requiring you to step out of your comfort zone. There are multiple areas I need to put my self out there in, including writing ..."ouch!"
3. "Authenticity is winning"
I loved a question from a fellow GG, inquiring about remaining authentic in an Instagram world. I totally relate to trying to just do you when everyone else is slinging waist trainers. For example, I am sure Brown In The City would get a million more clicks a day if we posted Kim K's nudes...but that's not us. Sybil advised to "make sure you know why you're on social media". If we tried to do such post, we would not be able to sustain it because that is not who we are or what we are trying to accomplish.
4. "Go out. Get Low. Twerk Somethin"
And sometimes you just have to let your hair down and dance it out. When you need to recharge, step away from work, forget about what's stressing you, Julee suggests having fun, whatever that means for you. For Julee (and for me) that's a night out, sipping something, and dancing like you're 21.
Now, I'm sure you want to get plugged into The Great Girlfriends if you aren't already. You can listen to this DOPE podcast on their website or Itunes. Also join the Facebook group and follow on Instagram.
There are a lot of episodes to catch up on if you're a new GG, so here are my top 3 fav!
- An oldie but goodie that still goes hard because I think determining the difference between persistence and stalking is an art.
- Because I'm trying to get my COINS in order while living in a Sallie Mae world.
-My friend is in this one and it's HILARIOUS!
