Brown City Shaker: Indya Hicks, Founder of Love Grace, The Brand

Our latest Brown City Shaker is the beautiful Indya Hicks, founder and owner of Love Grace, The Brand, a line of products that are customized and hand-mixed using Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils which are free of parabens and gluten.

In this interview, we discuss what inspires this #girlboss, struggles she had to go through as an entrepreneur and how she finds work-life balance!

Can you tell us what Love Grace, The Brand is and the meaning behind the name?

Grace means so many different things to me. It was my great-grandmothers name. It is sufficient for us each day. It carries you when you think you can go no more. Grace gives you hope. Grace gave me the ability to create Love, Grace. I wanted to create a tangible experience that someone would always have. Something essential, that will always be remembered. With love, by love. Love, Grace.

Have you always wanted to be a business owner? If not, what inspired you to start Love Grace, The Brand?

Yes! I knew I didn't want to work for anyone. I've always wanted to be my own boss. I have always loved expensive perfume! Hair became something that I fell in love with doing. It became more than just hair; I was helping people. Why not make this into something I can do every day!?

What are some challenges you faced as a woman of color starting your own business?

I am thankful to say that I haven't faced many, if any, challenges. I will say that it's a lot harder for a start-up. For some reason there is a lack of support for black-owned businesses. My hope is to be a part of the change in that!

How do you balance being an entrepreneur and finding time for friends/family/love?

Family is first. I honestly make time for it! Thankfully, my schedule is pretty flexible so I'm able to travel and work from wherever. As far as a social life, that doesn't really exist -- but i'm okay with that for now!

What are some things you like to do for fun?

I love food (says everyone in DC)! Ethiopian food is my favorite. Brunch is the DC thing to do -- Sunday's are the best! I love the Botanical Garden in South West DC...it's so beautiful there! I could spend all day there. All of the museums are cool too. I love going to the National Museum of the American Indian and the Natural Science Museum.

Yum! Ethiopian food definitely sounds delicious. What is your favorite product from Love Grace, The Brand and what are the inspirations behind cultivating new products/scents?

All of them are my favorite! Right now, I'm loving Lulit the fragrance antidote. Everyone always stops me when I'm wearing it! It has definitely become everyone's favorite -- that is our top selling product right now!

I find inspiration from anything really. A story, someone's day, an ailment, a scent, someone who I just met...that's the fun part!

What is your morning routine like? What is something that you have to do every morning to prepare you for the day?

I have to meditate or else my whole day is off! A form of meditation can be many things -- I have to start my day off positively. Good vibes only!

Being positive is definitely key! What advice would you give to women that want to practice self-care/healthy living but may not know where to start?

I always say "get still" so you can listen. I am a firm believer that your body tells you what's wrong and in what ways to heal it. But first, you have to get in tune with yourself...get to know you a little.

Now that we are transitioning from Summer to Fall, which products would you suggest to keep us looking glowy/healthy?

Hilu! It's our beauty antidote from our regime. Everyday, you can use it all over or on dry areas of your skin. Hilu's use is to regenerate and heal new skin cells for smoother, healthier skin!

Lastly, what does being Brown In The City mean to you?

Melanin! Gosh, that's so deep. To me, it's the best...it means that I have a story behind my brown skin. That flows from so many different places. From such a diverse background, forming together and being me. Being proud in who I am. The brown girl that I have become. That's so cool to me!
